The HeArt is Present


Regina Frank has been exhibiting her installations under the title “The Artist is Present” internationally since 1989 in windows, museums and public spaces. Marina Abramoviç, who used this title for her very famous performance at MOMA in New York, had published my work in 2004 and knew my book “The Artist is Present”. Inspired by this, "The Artist is Present" became "The Art is Present" in 2015, and in 2017 The HeArt is Present, welcoming the idea that life is less and less personal and introducing the focus on the HeArt and not on the Artist: going further and deeper into the present of presence and into the artists gift. The performer’s visual language, spoken mainly through text and textiles, reveals a meditative process of exploring inner and outer networks as well as political, cultural and spiritual issues. Her works encompass a field of tension between virtual and real, analog and digital. She has been investigating the Phenomena of Social Software and Software installation. For 28 years she has been developing a series of unpublished performances: long duration performances that conclude in different phases.

Regina Frank has lectured extensively, including at Central Saint Martins - University of the Arts London, New York University, The Metropolitan Museum, the Bronx Museum in New York, the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, at M.I.T. Boston and at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Her works have been displayed at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, Serpentine Gallery in London, Kunsthalle in Berlin, Reina Sofia in Madrid, MOCA in Los Angeles, Spiral Wacoal Art Center in Tokyo and at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, ARCO in Madrid in the project section, the Art Institute in Chicago. She has participated with performances at the 1999 Venice Biennial, the EXPO 2000 in Hannover, EXIT 2001 in Helsinki, the Intermediale in Mainz, the Performance Studies Conference 7 in 2001. She created interactive projects and performances for the House of Press in Berlin in 2001 and Muffathalle in Munich. In 2003 she had solo exhibitions at the San Diego Museum of Art and the Museum for Communication, Berlin. Frank was Artist in Residency at SAIR in Sapporo, Japan in 2004 with exhibitions at Contemporary Art Institute and at Sapporo Museum of Modern Art. Her Artist in Residency in Kio-A-Thau, Kaohsiung, Taiwan culminated in the CO4 Taiwan Avant- garde Documenta as part of the Taipeh Biennal and several solo performances and exhibitions. 2004 she also taught at the Bauhaus Dessau, worked with Sasha Waltz at the Festival Montpellier Dance. In 2005 she created a comprehensive art project for the Umweltbundesamt UBA (Federal Environmental Agency, FEA) UBA, Berlin/Dessau, which culminated in an intranet site and a performance. Also she participated in the UNESCO Headquarters, Paris “Art-Robe” exhibition, at the 5th Biennial for Art Outdoor Sculpture in Darmstadt and at Fondapol in Paris. She was Artist in Residency at Sally and Don Lucas Artist Program in Silicon Valey where she developed the Dream Weaving Software. In 2007 she contributed to Foward Interra34, Russia and Umami Festival, New York, was artist in residency at Universidad Poli- técnica de Valencia and gave birth to her daughter Sofia. She participated at the biannual symposium with an installation using Solar Energy and LED Technology.

In 2008 and 2009 she was part of the Vogelfrei Biennale in Darmstadt with a Solar dress and in 2011 with a Solar Bench. Since 2012 she is performing her new work iLAnd among them in Munich, Haus der Kunst and Rapid Pulse Festival Chicago, Infraction Venezia, Venice Biennale. From 2013-2016 iLAnd traveled to  Somenlina Finland, Uprooted Festival,  Inf'raction, Séte, Holland "Die letzte Butterfahrt" and Live 4 in Guanghzou, China, Vogelfrei-Biennale, Darmstadt. Regina Frank had an anthological exhibition at the Palace Museum Meßkirch, at Flores do Cabo and at Perve Galeria. In 2017 she went with Perve Galeria to London Art Fair and showed 7 performances with 7 messengers featuring Collection Moral, Tautologique and Traditional. She elaborated her poetic performative process in various interventions in public space among them for the Abril and a 7x7 and hour performance at MAAT in 2017. She started 2018 with a solo exhibition in Germany at the WKZ International Center for Forest Art and performed during the Darmstädter Tage der Fotografie. The installation on view at MAAT was part of the larger series iLAND which Frank has shown in seven different countries in 21 cities so far. iLAND in sickness in Health is currently the cover image of the exhibition Eco Visionary that lasts from March until October 2018. Recently she participated in Hannover at the iJacking, at “Geteiltes Land “ Berlin Teufelsberg, BioArt 2018, Seoul South Korea, in Tracey Emin’s project in the VIP lounge at Frieze Artfair London, and curated the show: Triple Grace at Palacio de Independencia, Lisbon. TheNewArtFest18 featured iLAND at Websummit and MUNHAC (Museum of Natural History) in Lisbon. 

Her work is in numerous private and museum collections, such as San Diego Museum of Art, the Deutsche Bank Collection. Regina Frank’s work bridging text, technology and textile, was featured since the early 90ies in various history books, art magazines, newspapers as well as Vogue, Harpers, Parade and Cosmopolitan. 

In April 1999 Frank’s monograph “The Artist Is Present” was published by the Senate for Cultural Affairs in Berlin Germany. Franks work has been featured in many publications including: Sculpture Magazine, Screen Multimedia, Parade Magazine, Harper’s, The New York Times, Rethinking Marxism, Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Frankfurter Rundschau, Frankfurter Allgemeine, Japan Times, Contemporary Art, Art Forum, Art Papers, Art Examiner, Art Press, Being on Line, Arte y Parte, Neo, Public Art and Ecology and On the Issues Magazine.
